The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, a short manual of Christian life, baptism, prayer, and the Lord’s Supper from the end of the first century or the beginning of the second. The early church knew it by name, but it was lost until Philotheos Bryennios, Metropolitan of Nicomedia, found it in 1873 in a manuscript of 1056 at Constantinople.

The church fathers are the early Christian writers. Their quotations show which reading was known, where, and when, often earlier than any manuscript of the passage that survives.
